    South Sea Pearls

South Sea pearls are the most coveted and most expensive pearls in the world.  They have it all: big, round, lustrous, thick nacred pearls that arrive in a royal range of colors from white and silver to champagne and deepest gold.

South Sea pearls are cultivated in the Pinctada Maxima oyster, the world’s biggest bivalve.  Two species of this gargantuan oyster exist, the silver lipped and the gold lipped, resulting in the range of colors for the pearls.  This monstrous mollusk is about the size of a hub cap, about one foot in diameter and 12 pounds in weight.  There’s a lot of room in this beast to grow a big, fat pearl.

South Sea pearls have a sensual luster that is softer and more satiny than the sharp, mirror-like shine of the best Japanese Akoyas.  When buying, standard pearl value factors apply.  Big, round, smooth, lustrous, well-matched pearls command the highest prices.  However, the glowing luster of fine South Sea pearls makes smaller sizes appear larger and off-round shapes appear rounder.  Clever buyers may achieve a more expensive, more important and often more intriguing look at a lower price by selecting smaller pearls in more organic shapes.

Seabourn Pearls has a huge selection of South Sea pearl necklaces and stud earrings.  Our South Sea pearls are available in a full range of colors from deep gold to light champagne and brightest silver to softest white in round, off round and baroque shapes.  Shop our online gallery with confidence and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with your Seabourn Pearls guarantee of quality and satisfaction.
